1 – Describe how it was the first time you saw the movie “The Great Lebowski”

JPdW – I really don’t remember the first time I saw The Big Lebowski, but I think it must have been some blurry VHS evening. at home.

2 – To give readers an idea of your art try to describe what are some of your cultural references. At least 3 sources of inspiration that are important to you and why

JPdW – As I work mostly as animator my inspiration comes from motion graphics from all around the globe. 
Music is a big part of my life. I can not work without music in the background. The movie The Doors (’91) changed my perception of music and way of life in a big way. 
Pinball art in general is also a great source of inspiration. I’ve been attract to pinball since I was a little kid.

3 – Describe what is your environment where you live and where you work

JPdW – I moved to Nijmegen in 2010. This Dutch city, founded 2000 ago by the romans, has many left minded citizens, a nice variety of (music) events and just a good vibe all year round. I work from an office in a building shared with several artist in many disciplines (fine art, product design, graphic and web design).

4 – Indicate which of 2 of the artists you attend regularly and what you think are the most you can find today in your creative environment

JPdW – M.C. Escher has always inspired me with his clean and mathematical art style. Just amazing and mind boggling how he has created his art without the use of a computer. I also admire ‘the’ 4 Renaissance artists (da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello). Their expertise in various art forms inspires me to try different things and styles all the time.

5 – Now that we are at the end. Try to explain what is the “Big Lebowski” for you and why do you think it has so much influence the world of graphics and illustration

JPdW – I love The Big Lebowski for it’s dialogues and legendary scenes. You really need to see it a couple of times to ‘get it’. The Dude’s laid-back, pacifist way of living is something I can relate to. And probably many other artists?

1 – Descrivi come è andata la prima volta che hai visto il film “Il grande Lebowski”..

JPdW – Non ricordo veramente la prima volta che ho visto Big Lebowski, ma credo che sia stata una serata con una vecchia videocassetta sfocata, a casa mia.

2 – Per dare ai lettori un’idea della tua arte, prova a descrivere quelli che sono alcuni dei tuoi riferimenti culturali, almeno 3 fonti di ispirazione che sono per te importanti e il perché

JPdW – Mentre lavoro principalmente come animatore, la mia ispirazione derivava dalla motion graphic che vedevo dappertutto, in tutto il mondo.
Anche la musica però è una grande fonte di ispirazione di tutta la mia vita. Non posso lavorare senza musica in sottofondo. Il film The Doors (’91) ha cambiato la mia percezione della musica e del modo di vivere.
L’arte che sta dietro al design dei flipper – in generale – è anch’essa una grande fonte di ispirazione per me. Sono sempre stato attratto dai flipper, fin da quando ero un ragazzino.

3 – Descrivi quello che è il tuo ambiente dove vivi e dove lavori.

JPdW – Mi sono trasferito a Nijmegen, Olanda, nel 2010. Questa città, fondata 2000 anni fa dai romani, ha molti cittadini di sinistra e una gra quantità di musica live che riguardano quasi tutto l’anno. Lavoro in un ufficio situato in un edificio condiviso con diversi altri artisti di diverse discipline (design di prodotto, grafica e web design).

4 – Indica quali sono 2 degli artisti che segui regolarmente e che pensi siano il massimo che si può trovare oggi nell’ambiente creativo

JPdW – M.C. Escher mi ha sempre ispirato con il suo stile artistico pulito e matematico. Ancora mi sorprendo e affascino da come ha creato la sua arte senza l’uso del computer. Ammiro anche i 4 artisti rinascimentali (Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael e Donatello). La loro esperienza in varie forme d’arte mi ispira a provare tecniche e stili sempre diversi.

5 – Adesso che siamo alla fine, prova a spiegare cosa rappresenta per te “Il grande Lebowski” e perché pensi che abbia così tanto influenzato il mondo della grafica e dell’illustrazione

JPdW – Amo il Grande Lebowski per i dialoghi e le leggendarie scene di cui è composto. Hai davvero bisogno di vederlo più di un paio di volte per diventare uno di loro. Il modo di vivere tranquillo e pacifico del Drugo è qualcosa con cui sto alla grande. E come me probabilmente anche molti degli altri artisti del libro…
