Diego Bonci Diego is 34 years old, creatively repressed on a daytime, he goes out of his pen and ink studio at night, creating monochromatic surreal worlds.

1 – Describe how it was the first time you saw the movie “The Great Lebowski”

DB – I was 18 years old. To me and my friends, it was very often the case that we rented movies and brought them home to one of us. We were always in some, like a dozen kids. I often did not follow the movie because I was chatting with someone, I came to film started or I went first.
When we rented “The big Lebowski” this happened: I remembered nothing in the movie, only the title. I came to mind later, a few years later, when I happened to see him for the second time. And since that day, whenever I take the DVD in my hand, I think about that night more than 15 years ago, when I snapped “The big Lebowski”.

2 – To give readers an idea of your art try to describe what are some of your cultural references. At least 3 sources of inspiration that are important to you and why

DB – Talking about cinema: David Lynch! The more time passes and the more I find it difficult to appreciate any movie, watch it from start to finish, look at it, remember it well. Except for a few directors, and one of them is David Lynch, the most visionary of all, and so perhaps the one that most influenced my way of drawing. Every frame, every scene, often unconnected from the rest, I consider them a jewel. I often remember the scene in which Badalamenti spit coffee in Mulholland Drive: I love Lynch for things like this! Speaking of Literature: Raymond Chandler! I can not stop reading and rereading her novels that feature protagonist Philip Marlowe. Noir intricate, impossible to follow but where I love to lose to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere.
Whenever I take one of the books in my hand, I divide the pages until I get to the rare passages in which Marlowe returns home after a full day of work and relaxes by playing chess alone … I can never do without it. I read somewhere, but knowing the matter you understand, that there is a bit of Marlowe in The Big Lebowski!
Speaking of music: James Murphy! LCD Soundsystem frontman and manufacturer. I have always fallen behind everything she does. I do not remember a single time when I was listening to the Soundsystem LCD and I was in a bad mood: IM-POS-SI-BI-LE! Natural antidepressant.

3 – Describe what is your environment where you live and where you work

DB – I live in a small hill country in the brands, halfway between sea and mountain, isolated from the world but not too much: when you want to escape just climb up the car and choose where. I work ten minutes away from home, sometimes I go biking … My work does not make me happy. He is creatively castrant, but that’s … I do not complain because I look around from anywhere else I see worse: exploited people, poorly paid and frustrated … Here the bad season here may be too long, cold and boring. It goes much better when the sun goes out!
The boredom is transformed into a delightful tranquility: ride out, go to the park, talk and three beers … I was studying and living in Bologna, but I came back to my little village for love: my wife and I went to the asylum together! And now we have a son of not even two years who is a show and I think he will grow here as we did.

4 – Indicate which of 2 of the artists you attend regularly and what you think are the most you can find today in your creative environment

DB – They are dead and buried (so I go out of the way …), but I consider them contemporary because I still have to find out about them and every time I meet them in books, online and wherever I can, I find something new.
Aubrey Beardsley, an English illustrator at the end of the eighteenth century, scandalously unknown to the general public as well as to some workmen!
Only black on white, nothing else. By necessity, since at that time the printing techniques did not allow to represent colors or halftones, and there was no alternative if you wanted illustrate books. But what lines! And that imaginary … I’m in love lost to him. Dead young, not even 26 years old … It strikes the caparbietà and the enthusiasm with which he managed to affirm himself as an artist despite the health, always cagionevole.
Edward Hopper, he is very well known. The atmosphere in his paintings is enchanting, he wants to get in the canvas, stay for a while, immobile, and enjoy that peace. A few weeks ago I found something too good for me: in Nighthawks it seems that Hopper wanted to illustrate a passage by The Great Sleep of Chandler, of which I spoke above!
OK I nominate 2 contemporary artists who fascinated me with their monochrome illustrations: Sveta Dorosheva, Ukraine living in Israel. Daehyun Kim in art Monassi, South Korean.
Unreachable Monsters! Looking at their work sometimes gets the urge to stop drawing 

5 – Now that we are at the end. Try to explain what is the “Big Lebowski” for you and why do you think it has so much influence the world of graphics and illustration

DB – I would like to live in California alone, without any family ties, be unemployed but do not worry about it, with my friends “respecting a regime of hard drugs to keep the mind flexible”, relax at home smoking a barrel as I do bathing or drinking white russian and doing tai chi, being involved in an incredible story and having to deal with millionaires, pornographers, artists and nihilists but above all to wash me in bed with Julianne Moore!
Dream forbidden and unrealizable, me and millions of other fanatics of this wonderful movie.

1 – Descrivi come è andata la prima volta che hai visto il film “Il grande Lebowski”..

DB – Avevo 18 anni. A me e ai miei amici capitava molto spesso di affittare dei film e di vederceli a casa di uno di noi. Eravamo sempre in parecchi, tipo una quindicina di ragazzi. Spesso non seguivo il film perchè chiacchieravo con qualcuno, arrivavo a film iniziato o me ne andavo prima.
Quando affittammo “The big lebowski” accadde prorpio questo: non ricordavo niente del film, soltanto il titolo. Mi rivenne in mente più avanti, qualche anno dopo, quando mi capitò di vederlo per la seconda volta. E da quel giorno, ogni volta che riprendo in mano il DVD, penso a quella sera di più di 15 anni fa, quando snobbai “The big lebowski”.

2 – Per dare ai lettori un’idea della tua arte, prova a descrivere quelli che sono alcuni dei tuoi riferimenti culturali, almeno 3 fonti di ispirazione che sono per te importanti e il perché

DB – Parlando di cinema: David Lynch! Più passa il tempo e più mi resta difficile apprezzare qualsiasi film, guardarlo dall’inizio alla fine, riguardarlo, ricordarlo bene. Fanno eccezione pochi registi e uno di loro è David Lynch, il più visionario di tutti e quindi forse quello che ha più influenzato il mio modo di disegnare. Ogni fotogramma, ogni scena, spesso slegata da tutto il resto, li considero un gioiello. Mi viene spesso in mente la scenain cui Badalamenti sputa il caffè in Mulholland Drive: adoro Lynch per cose come questa!
Parlando di letteratura: Raymond Chandler! Non riesco a smettere di leggere e rileggere i suoi romanzi che hanno per protagonista Philip Marlowe. Noir intricatissimi, trame impossibili da seguire ma in cui adoro perdermi per godermi appieno l’atmosfera meravigliosa. Ogni volta che riprendo in mano uno dei libri, divoro le pagine finchè non arrivo ai rari passaggi in cui Marlowe torna a casa dopo una giornata piena di lavoro e si rilassa giocando a scacchi da solo… non potrò mai farne a meno. Ho letto da qualche parte, ma conoscendo la materia si capisce, che c’è un po’ di Marlowe in The Big Lebowski!
Parlando di musica: James Murphy! Frontman degli LCD Soundsystem e produttore. Da sempre sbavo dietro a ogni cosa che fa. Non ricordo una singola volta in cui ascoltavo gli LCD Soundsystem ed ero di cattivo umore: IM-POS-SI-BI-LE! Antidepressivo naturale.

3 – Descrivi quello che è il tuo ambiente dove vivi e dove lavori.

DB – Vivo in un piccolo paese di collina nelle marche, a metà strada tra mare e montagna, isolato dal mondo ma non troppo: quando ti viene la voglia di fuggire basta salire in auto e scegliere dove. Lavoro a dieci minuti di macchina da casa, a volte vado in bici… Il mio lavoro d’ufficio non mi entusiasma. Creativamente è castrante, ma questo è… non mi lamento perchè come giro lo sguardo da qualsiasi altra parte vedo di peggio: gente sfruttata, mal pagata e frustrata… Qui da noi la brutta stagione può essere troppo lunga, fredda e noiosa. Va molto meglio quando esce il sole!
La noia si trasforma in godevolissima tranquillità: esci in bici, vai al parco, due chiacchiere e tre birre… Studiavo e vivevo a Bologna, ma sono tornato al mio piccolo paese per amore: io e mia moglie andavamo all’asilo insieme! Ed ora abbiamo un figlio di neanche due anni che è uno spettacolo e credo crescerà qui come abbiamo fatto noi.

4 – Indica quali sono 2 degli artisti che segui regolarmente e che pensi siano il massimo che si può trovare oggi nell’ambiente creativo

DB – Sono morti e sepolti (quindi vado fuori tema…), ma li considero contemporanei perchè ancora devo scoprire tanto di loro e ogni volta che li incontro nei libri, online e ovunque sia possibile, scopro qualcosa di nuovo.
Aubrey Beardsley, illustratore inglese di fine ‘800, scandalosamente sconosciuto al grande pubblico ma anche a qualche addetto ai lavori!
Solo nero su bianco, nient’altro. Per necessità, visto che a quel tempo le tecniche di stampa non permettevano di rappresentare colori o mezzitoni, e non c’era alternativa se volevi
illustrare libri. Ma che linee! E che immaginario… sono innamorato perso di lui.
Morto giovanissimo, neanche 26enne… Colpisce la caparbietà e l’entrusiasmo con cui è riuscito ad affermarsi come artista malgrado la salute, da sempre cagionevole.
Edward Hopper, lui sì molto noto.
L’atmosfera che si respira nei suoi quadri è incantevole, viene voglia di entrare nella tela, rimanerci per un bel po’, immobili, e godersi quella pace.
Qualche settimana fa ho scoperto una cosa troppo bella per me: in Nighthawks pare che Hopper abbia voluto illustrare un passaggio de Il Grande Sonno di Chandler, di cui ho parlato sopra!
OK nomino 2 artisti contemporanei che mi hanno stregato con le loro illustrazioni monocromatiche: Sveta Dorosheva, Ucraina che vive in Israele. Daehyun Kim in arte Monassi, sudcoreano.
Mostri inarrivabili! A guardare i loro lavori a volte viene la voglia di smettere di disegnare…

5 – Adesso che siamo alla fine, prova a spiegare cosa rappresenta per te “Il grande Lebowski” e perché pensi che abbia così tanto influenzato il mondo della grafica e dell’illustrazione

Vorrei vivere in California, da solo, senza alcun legame familiare, essere disoccupato ma non preoccuparmene, spassarmela con i miei amici “rispettando un regime di droghe abbastanza rigido per mantenere la mente flessibile”, rilassarmi a casa fumando una canna mentre faccio il bagno o bevendo white russian e facendo tai chi, essere coinvolto in una storia incredibile e avere per questo a che fare con milionari, pornografi, artisti e nichilisti ma soprattutto per spassarmela a letto con Julianne Moore!
Sogno proibito e irrealizzabile, mio e di milioni di altri fanatici di questo film meraviglioso.
