The interviews with the artists who collaborated in the creation of the book “The Big Lebowski Art Collection” continues. Today we present Łukasz Samsonowicz from Poland.

Born in 1983 in Lubsko in Poland obtained Masters in Fine Art in 2007.
Łukasz works as a comic artist, illustrator, painter and graphic designer.

1 – Describe how it was the first time you saw the movie “The Great Lebowski”

LS – It was a good story! The film immediately attracted me to his surreal mood and inebriated and infected me. If I’m not mistaken I looked at it with my friends in my room. It was probably 1999. At that time I had a video player for VHS tapes and sometimes we did film shows together. There was a rental of videotapes next to my house and at that time we often smoked grass. The conclusions I pulled out of the film … quite a few would say, more than anything else I think can make you fall in love if you lead a relaxed life, you have friends and do what you love.

2 – To give readers an idea of your art try to describe what are some of your cultural references. At least 3 sources of inspiration that are important to you and why

LS – I find inspiration in everyday life. I like horror and science fiction movies, comics, hardcore music, punk and rock’n’roll, the absurd and black humor, Dadaism, pop art, the productions of the Monty Python group. I am also inspired by anarchist thought. I’ve studied it for years and I really like it. This is why I try to follow what happens in the world and sometimes comment on it through my work. I’m not looking for inspiration, I’m calmly waiting for something to kick my ass or my head off! When it happens, I react and create a new job. Obviously, even the lack of money is an inspiration … you have to live with something, that’s why I run my studio.

3 – Describe what is your environment where you live and where you work

LS – I currently live in the small town of Lubsko, Poland, near the border with Germany. The city is surrounded by farmland and numerous forests. There are ponds, grassland for breeding, lakes, good recreational areas for cycling, picturesque ruins of old factories covered with shrubs and trees. I often walk with my family in the Karaś lagoon, in the summer season we rest at the Białków basin in the nearby town of Nowiniec. The neighborhood is calm, I like it.
If man has good contact with nature, he can recharge his mind with positive energy. Every day I work in an old house, in a room of about 11 square meters. There is a large drawing table, a bookshop for comics and books, a work cabinet and various painting equipment. A good place to live is for me a place where there is internet access … and friends.

4 – Indicate which of 2 of the artists you attend regularly and what you think are the most you can find today in your creative environment

LS – My favorite artists are comic cartoonists Simon Bisley and Przemysław Truściński. I appreciate them for their line, for the perfect design that they use as a means of expression. Their creative research, experiments and their expressions give the comic book a great freshness as a work of art and therefore inspire me.

5 – Now that we are at the end. Try to explain what is the “Big Lebowski” for you and why do you think it has so much influence the world of graphics and illustration

LS – The film is about life, it’s authentic, it has everything you need to understand life: laughter, friendship, love [alcohol or bowling], adventure, death. He talks about these important things in a discreet, ordinary, relaxed way … just like the main character – a relaxed guy. That’s why I love him. It presents a surreal mosaic of intrigues, events that could happen to each of us in real life, which is why it stimulates the imagination of various artists in the world.

1 – Descrivi come è andata la prima volta che hai visto il film “Il grande Lebowski”..

LS – E ‘stata una bella storia! Il film mi ha immediatamente attirato nel suo umore surreale e mi ha inebriato e contagiato. Se non sbaglio l’ho guardato con i miei amici in camera mia. Probabilmente era il 1999. A quel tempo avevo un lettore video per cassette VHS e talvolta facevamo proiezioni di film insieme. C’era un noleggio di videocassette accanto a casa mia e a quel tempo fumavamo spesso erba. Le conclusioni che tirai fuori dal film… piuttosto poche direi, più che altro penso possa farti innamorare se conduci una vita rilassata, hai amici e fai ciò che ami.

2 – Per dare ai lettori un’idea della tua arte, prova a descrivere quelli che sono alcuni dei tuoi riferimenti culturali, almeno 3 fonti di ispirazione che sono per te importanti e il perché

LS – Trovo ispirazione nella vita di tutti i giorni. Mi piacciono i film horror e di fantascienza, i fumetti, la musica hardcore, il punk e il rock’n’roll, l’assurdo e il black humor, il dadaismo, la pop art, le produzioni del gruppo Monty Python. Mi ispiro anche al pensiero anarchico. L’ho studiato per anni e mi piace proprio. Per questo cerco di seguire cosa accade nel mondo e a volte commentarlo attraverso il mio lavoro. Non cerco per forza l’ispirazione, sto aspettando con calma qualcosa che mi prenda a calci il culo o la testa! Quando succede reagisco e creo  un nuovo lavoro. Ovviamente anche la mancanza di denaro è una fonte d’ispirazione… devi vivere con qualcosa, ecco perché gestisco il mio studio.

3 – Descrivi quello che è il tuo ambiente dove vivi e dove lavori.

LS – Vivo attualmente nella piccola città di Lubsko, in Polonia, vicino al confine con la Germania. La città è circondata da campi coltivabili e numerose foreste. Ci sono stagni, pascoli per allevamento, laghi, buone aree ricreative per il ciclismo, suggestive rovine di vecchie fabbriche ricoperte di arbusti e alberi. Cammino spesso con la mia famiglia nella laguna Karaś, nella stagione estiva riposiamo al bacino Białków nella vicina città di Nowiniec. Il quartiere è calmo, mi piace.
Se l’uomo ha un buon contatto con la natura, può ricaricare la sua mente con energia positiva. Ogni giorno lavoro in una vecchia casa, in una stanza di circa 11 metri quadrati. C’è un grande tavolo da disegno, una libreria per fumetti e libri, un armadietto da lavoro e varie attrezzature per la pittura. Un buon posto dove vivere è per me un posto dove c’è l’accesso a internet … e gli amici.

4 – Indica quali sono 2 degli artisti che segui regolarmente e che pensi siano il massimo che si può trovare oggi nell’ambiente creativo

LS – I miei artisti preferiti sono i fumettisti comici Simon Bisley e Przemysław Truściński. Li apprezzo per la loro linea, per il perfetto disegno che utilizzano come mezzo di espressione. Le loro ricerche creative, gli esperimenti e le loro espressioni danno molta freschezza al fumetto come opera d’arte e quindi mi ispirano.

5 – Adesso che siamo alla fine, prova a spiegare cosa rappresenta per te “Il grande Lebowski” e perché pensi che abbia così tanto influenzato il mondo della grafica e dell’illustrazione

LS – Il film parla della vita, è autentico, ha tutto il necessario per capire la vita: risate, amicizia, amore [all’alcool o al bowling], avventura, morte. Parla di queste cose importanti in modo discreto, ordinario, rilassato … proprio come il protagonista – un tizio rilassato. Ecco perché lo amo. Presenta un mosaico surreale di intrighi, eventi che potrebbero accadere a ciascuno di noi nella vita reale, è per questo che stimola l’immaginazione di vari artisti nel mondo.
